Introducing Voice Notes: Think Out Loud, Save Forever

The idea that got away
You know the one. It landed while you were walking the dog, halfway through a shower, three stops into a bus ride. You told yourself you would remember it. You did not.
We built Voice Notes for exactly that moment.
Tap the mic, say the thing, stop. By the time your thumb comes off the button, the words are already text, waiting for you inside your library.
What it actually does
A voice note in Save for Later is a first-class saved item, sitting next to your links and text notes with its own quiet little mic icon. Under the hood:
- You record up to two minutes of audio, right from the Save dialog, a Save Box, or an existing item.
- We send the clip to a fast Whisper model and hand you back a clean transcript in seconds.
- You review it, tweak the title, and drop it into the Save Box where it belongs.
- The audio is discarded. Only the text lives on.
That last part matters, so let us say it again louder for the room in the back.
Your voice is never stored
We transcribe and delete. No bucket, no playback, no "we might use this to train something later." The recording exists just long enough to become words, then it is gone. The transcript is yours, editable, and lives with the rest of your library under the same privacy rules everything else follows.
It is the shortest audio retention policy we could design without cheating: zero seconds after transcription.
Three ways to use it
1. The walking thought. Open the Save dialog, switch to the Voice tab, ramble for thirty seconds about a book idea. Save it into your "Half-formed thoughts" Save Box and go finish your walk.
2. The margin note. Reading an article you already saved and something clicks? Open the item, tap "Add voice note," and speak your reaction. It gets appended to the item's notes with a [Voice note] marker, so your future self knows past-you was thinking out loud.
3. On the go, in the extension. The Chrome extension has its own mic. Same flow, same transcription, no context switch.
Why we did it this way
We are stubborn about a few things at Save for Later. Voice Notes had to honour all of them:
- The library stays calm. A voice note is just a note. It does not clutter your feed with an audio player, a waveform, or a "play again" prompt.
- Ollie stays helpful, not chatty. Transcription counts toward the same monthly AI allowance as everything else. No surprise limits, no separate meter to track.
- You stay in control. You always see the transcript before it saves. Whisper is good, not perfect. Fix the typo, add a title, then commit.
A small thing that changes the shape of your day
Most of what we save is captured at a desk, on purpose. Voice Notes are for the ideas that show up when you are not at a desk and were not on purpose. That is a surprisingly large slice of the good ones.
Give it a try on your next walk. Say the thing out loud. Let us do the typing.
Ready to try it? Open the Save dialog anywhere in the app and look for the Voice tab. On mobile, the yellow + button in your bottom bar is the fastest way in.
